There is a William SOMMERFELD listed on the Washington County 1870 census along with my great-grandfather Michael SOMMERFELD. I have reason to believe they are brothers. I believe many of William's descendents ended up in Hamilton County. Many of Michael's descendents came to Bosque County, and many stayed in Washington County. They came from Posen province and I have narrowed it down to Skoki (Schokken) area, now in Poland.

I find an immigration record for Michael SOMMERFELD / SOMMERFIELD, arrived Galveston, Texas, Nov. 29, 1869 on Bark 'Galveston' from Bremen. He is listed with two other Sommerfeld men on the same list, making me believe these are his brothers. On 1870 census for Washington County, Texas, he is listed as a hired hand living with an unrelated family. He is shown as married, but apparently alone. On 1880 Washington County, Texas census, Pauline & children are listed, but last child born in Posen was Julius, born 1873. So if this is the right Michael both times (I know 1880 census entry is correct family) he must have gone back to Posen after 1870 and returned after 1873.

I have very little. Unfortunately, the Michael SOMMERFELD who came over in 1869 with brothers Gottlieb & Willem & my Michael SOMMERFELD don't appear to be the same, there is a large discrepancy in ages. The first I can definitely pinpoint my Michael SOMMERFELD in Texas is 1876. They are on the 1880 census for Washington county and the youngest son at that time was born January, 1876 in Texas. Michael SOMMERFELD was born April 1836 in Posen. His wife was Pauline SCHULZ or SCHULTZ, born about 1839 in Posen. Their three oldest children were born in Posen, Emma 1865, Frederich, about 1871 and Julius SOMMERFELD July 24, 1873. The reason they are believed to be from the Skoki area is they settled near neighbors named BEHNKE, which they seem to have known well, probably from same area or maybe during voyage. One of the sons (my grandfather) later married a BEHNKE girl & they are from Skoki.
I believe them to have come ashore in Galveston but their first landfall may have been on the eastern seaboard so the record may be somewhere else. So far I have not traced them to any passenger lists. The immigration records from Galveston are largely missing for these years. It seems SOMMERFELD is a common name in Posen.
I would guess an 1875 arrival due to Henry SOMMERFELD being born January, 1876 in Texas. Can't find county records back that far. The application for citizenship Michael SOMMERFELD filed was 1884 in Washington county. It was part of a "mass" naturalization so there is little detail noted about origin (Germany). The birth date does match him on this record.
Any help you could give, a marriage record, the birth record or baptismal record for one of the children, would be very valuable to me. I am very frustrated about how to proceed. I have nothing on the SCHULZ side as Pauline SOMMERFELD nee SCHULZ died young and Michael remarried. There is no surviving family information to my knowledge.
