Hello Dieter

Thank you for your email. I belong to a Family History Society and I write a newsletter for a German Interest Group
and I will print your inquiry in the next issue. We are meeting this Saturday and I will also ready out your inquiry.

I have also attached a word doc with some Birth, Death and Marriage details of Sommerfeld(t)
that occured in Queensland up until 1914. Maybe this will help you.

I am descended from German people who emigrated at different times,
from various places in the old Germany, to Australia. While I acknowledge
that from an estimated 6 million German peoples who emigrated from the
German fatherland over a period spanning the middle to late 19th Century,
only a very small fraction of these people (some 200,000 odd) emigrated
to Australia or New Zealand. Most of the 6 Million people ended up in the
United States or Canada and others ended up in various parts of South
America.

In my case I have German ancestors from Mecklenburg, West Prussia,
Pommern, Brandenburg and also from near Bremen in Hanover. My German
ancestors immigrated here to Queensland Australia over a range of years
from 1862 to 1888. In all cases, the reasons for my different families
immigrating to Australia were for economic reasons not religious.

I have been involved in researching my German ancestry for around eight
years now and the biggest single obstacle to someone researching
German ancestry from Australia is the sheer distance that this country is
from Europe.

As a matter of interest does anyone in Germany know of any of his or
her Research families who immigrated to Australia in the 19th Century.

Vielen Dank !

Noel Bergman, Brisbane, Australia

The 'Lammershagen', 3 mast iron hull salin ship (Sloman & Co, Hamburg),
arrived at Moreton Bay (Brisbane), Queensland, on 8 January 1873 under
the command of Captain Pauls. It had left Hamburg on 6 October 1872.
The 877 ton vessel carried 399 passengers. During the voyage 17 babies
were born and 13 passengers died. On arrival the passengers were placed
in quarantine which indicates there was disease on board.
