I am reposting this in hopes to find out more on this line.
Until December, the furthest I had gone back was to my husband's great
grandfather Karl Fritz SOMMERFELD, who immigrated to the U.S. through
Galveston, Texas, in 1882 from Germany. They settled in Carmine, Fayette Co, Texas.
Very close to Round Top, Fayette County. Fayette County borders Washington
County, which is where some of the family lived also. Karl was born in
Brandenburg, Germany, and married Wilhelmine Henrietta BOTHE or BOTKE
in Germany. They immigrated to the U.S. with three children: Anna, Charles,
and Augusta. I don't know the name of the ship because, of course, the records
that Galveston would have of the years about 1875 to 1900 of their ships was
lost in the 1900 Hurricane that nearly wiped out Galveston. That's how my
luck runs.
I do know from family history that Karl had a brother here already, August
SOMMERFELD, who lived in Fayette Co, Tx. He was here before 1870
because he was on the 1870 census as a farmhand with another family.
August was on the 1880 census in Fayette County with his wife Amelia, and
a boarder named Robert STRIEKERT. That was as far as I got with August,
since he was killed in 1884. I did find the record of his marriage to Amelia
STEFFIN in Washington County. Then, I did find Amelia on the 1900 Washington
Co, Texas, census, widowed, living with nephew Gus Weidenbaum's family.
Apparently her maiden name was WEIDENBAUM, and STEFFIN was the
name of her 1st husband. She was married to a Friedrich STEFFIN in
Germany, before coming to the US.
Then I found out that there is another line, apparently a sister to August
and Karl, that I didn't know of before. The sister is Carolina Wilhelmina
Henriette SOMMERFELD, born in 1839 Vehlefanz, Brandenburg, Germany.
She was married to Johann Heinrich Gustav WEIDENBAUM. It seems
that Johann was brother to the Emelie (Amelia) WEIDENBAUM-STEFFIN
that was married to August SOMMERFELD. And now I see that the Robert
STRIEKERT that was living with August and Amelia in 1880 later married
Johann's daughter Augusta. This got to be a little confusing for a while
when I looked everyone up on census records and marriage records.
I found the ship record of when the Johann WEIDENBAUM and Carolina
SOMMERFELD family immigrated in 1872 to the U.S.
August SOMMERFELD immigrated sometime before 1870. (He was born
1842.) His sister Carolina SOMMERFELD Weidenbaum arrived in 1872
with her husband and children. Their brother Karl (my husband's great
grandfather) didn't arrive for 10 years, in 1882. (Maybe he stayed in Germany
to be near his parents, I don't know. He was 40 yrs of age when they came
to the U.S.)
The parents of August, Emelie, and Karl were Christian Friedrich Wilhelm
SOMMERFELD and Gottliebe EBEL, both born abt 1810 Germany. I am
wondering if there were other children besides Carolina, August, and Karl.
I have tracked almost all of the Sommerfeld (all name variations) families
in the Fayette / Washington County area from the 1870 through the 1930
census. Possibly some are related to our line, but I don't know for sure.
I don't know who posted the information about the Weidenbaum family on
ancestry, but I would like to contact that person to find out more on the
SOMMERFELD line in Germany.
Thanks for any help
