Does anyone know how I'd go about trying to get a copy of a birth/baptismal record for my
great-grandfather WARNKE, who was born ca. 1865, probably in Hammer, Scharnikau, Poznan ?
I need something other than family tradition to link him to his parents' names. I haven't worked
on this branch of the family except to gather family tradition and American sources, so I've no clue
where/how to start getting info from Hammer. I tried LDS microfilmed parish records, found them
*very* confusing for this area, and didn't find my gr-grandfather. Thanks for any help !
Hello Julie Michutka !
You say you tried the LDS films and found them confusing. So does that mean you checked the
church records for Czarnikau, 1781-1877, especially film #1194703, which has baptisms for 1861-
1877 ? Hammer was only 6 km (4 mi) north of what was Czarnikau, and so should be on that film.
If you are saying you had a hard time reading the film, maybe try the International Genealogical
Index (IGI) to see if your WARNKE is listed or possible relatives of that WARNKE.
Go the www.familysearch.org website, click on IGI (on the left), put in WARNKE (or whatever
surname), put in the region of 'Germany', and for the batch number put especially C 926284,
which covers baptisms found on that film (1861-1877). There are some WARNKEs listed when
you do that (I checkedd, but at the moment there are only feminine names -- sisters to your
ancestor ?). You can also try earlier years for that parish by changing the batch number (try
C 9926282 or C 926283 too). You can at least get a better sense of whether you are in the right
vicinity anyway. If you want more suggestions, let me know.
